Pub food’s come a long way, but wait til you see what’s happening with club food.
After five years and $106 million, the new look eateries at Canterbury League Club are in full swing. One of the smartest is The Bistro, a 700-seat family friendly restaurant, which does a mean line in chicken schnitzel, house-battered fish and chips, and burgers. But it’s some of the new menu items, like the charred asparagus and avocado salad, plus the massive 1-kilogram tomahawk steak, that really got us excited. And if you’re with a group, there are a bunch of massive share platters to fill up on.
Nearby is The Dynasty Chinese restaurant, a legendary yum cha place during the day and fine dining at night. We tried some of the house signature dumplings (black truffle pork dumplings) and the crispy seafood cheong fan, which is made with a special imported rice paper that gives it the crunch. We also tried the seafood san choy bow and the signature dish from the a la carte menu – beef and walnuts in a black pepper sauce. Sensational!
We couldn’t leave without giving Lavico Ristorante a try and boy, were we impressed. We tried some seafood starters – grilled king prawns and the lightest calamari you could imagine, then moved straight on to the Italian classics. The pizzas are made with a delectable house-raised base which gives the perfect crunch to chew ratio. And the pasta marinara with king prawns and fresh black mussels was also superb.
Only one way to finish off a meal like that – tiramisu!
